This entry is going to be a long one. I’m just warning you ahead of time.

I had a busy weekend! I thrifted, strolled sixth street, watched some movies, and went to a carnival. I don’t plan on boring you with the “I did this”, “I did that” routine, but I would like to share some highlights.

My mother and I took a stroll down 6th street looking at the Victorian homes and imagining who lived inside them. The photos can be found here, for those of you that like Victorian homes- but the one pictured about drew some attention. A friend and co-worker posted a comment on that particular image that reads:

“That is the house I almost rented that had the handicapped man in the basement and peepholes in the walls. No, I am not kidding.”

That surprises me. Here we are imagining these elegant lives with a handful of classy, old fashioned ladies, and instead there’s a sad old man who likes to spy on his tenants. It kind of damped my “romantic” view on the whole line of them. But oh well.

After some time at the carnival, my sisters, mother and I retreated back to my house, made dinner and watched, “Sabrina”. It was absolutely wonderful, and thanks to everyone who recommended it. The most amazing thing about it, though, was that it was my mother, me, and my eight year old sister who stayed up and watched the whole thing. We even talked about it afterward. I remember when I was little black and white movies would bore me, but here is my nine year old sister, laughing at funny parts and gasping at others. I can watch a good movie and not be terrified that some man is going to whip his pants down or there’s going to be this outrageous sex scene. It was the highlight of my night, truly.

And then I went thrifting. Actually, I think I went thrifting before the girls came over, but I simply can’t remember. The days are blurring. Anyway- I’ll just show you some things I snagged while thrifting!

First, I found an adorable book of sheet music of Russian nursery rhymes that I snagged for $.60 at the Women’s Resource Center and have demanded Tyler learn a few. There were also some other books up for grabs, “The Bell Jar”, and a cookbook for meals to be made entirely with a microwave. Uh-huh.

I didn’t technically “thrift” this so much as I bought it at the Unity Fair Trade Market. Which means, for those of you that don’t know, someone in India handmade this gorgeous wallet- and where normally a company would buy it from those wonderful, hard working hands for 10¢- we actually bought it for what it was worth to them. (Which is usually triple what they are normally paid.) So it was $12 for me, but it’s animal friendly, and people friendly. I was happy.

This I didn’t thrift this weekend, it’s actually the purse I’ve owned for two years, but it’s my favorite purchase ever. Goodwill, 30¢. Hell yes. Probably the best snag ever.

These looked like ale mugs and so I couldn’t pass them up.

These are the perfect hot cocoa mugs so I bought them with hopes of this fall keeping warm with hot cocoa, cinnamon, and whipped cream.

I don’t know how many of you were around when I found my favorite plaid thermos at Goodwill last year, but it broke more or less during our move to the new house- and so I had to get rid of it. Well- not only was there a thermos up for grabs, but an entire picnic set. $5. I screamed. (Silently).

A cute summer outfit. I also snagged three sets of earrings and a necklace for 50¢. I wish Mal had been with me as she loves to thrift. I saw a few things that probably would have made her heart pitter patter (and her bookshelf groan).

I also saw two 8mm video cameras that made me gasp when I saw them, but I wasn’t sure what to do because I didn’t know if they even worked or how I would even begin to use them properly.
So finally, last but not least, my new bag.
And now I’m done spending what little money I have.
I hope I bored you to tears.

That is all.

Perhaps I’m odd but I love hearing what friends get up to during their days. :D You sure have some amazing finds! I can’t actually figure out what my favourite item is. Toronto surely must have this sort of thing but I haven’t the faintest idea of where to search! It looks like so much fun.

The photo of the house really caught my eye. Oh to live in such a gorgeous building! I’ll pretend I didn’t read the part about the man. ;D

I miss thrifting! At some point I either lost my eye for it or the shops around me really did get full of crap and I left it and never returned. Sigh.

The Victorian house tale is creepy.

You do realize that that is our old house on the Sixth Street? The grey one at 333? The top two floors were ours for five years. gwm
