You smiled at me when I approached the register and leaned in close, and so of course I mirrored you. You told me what you thought of the daughter and mother who were in front of me in line, as if I wasn’t a customer that could potentially lose you a job. Spoken in lowered voices it felt like we knew each other sharing in some dark secret. And then,
“Credit or debit?” You asked.
