My x365 post today isn’t on an old schoolmate, a friend, or even someone I know or have ever spoken to. It’s on a complete stranger that commented on a photo in my flickr stream.

“Retired (1994),Sr. Citizen, married (40 yrs), bulbar polio survivor(1951), hockey fan, and christian. Now have COPD, Bronchiectasis, PPS, severe dysphagia, PEG tube fed and hypertension. Worked in pulp and paper industry 32 yrs as a mechanical project engineer. Interested in computers, digital photography and summer side trips in the car.”

Okay, at first I saw his age and his comment and I’ll admit, I judged. I freaked because a seventy year old man had commented on one of my portraits saying it was beautiful. It gave me the creeps, but after forcing myself to read through his entire profile I felt like an ass.

texasezrider says:
“Peter’s appreciation for the beauty of life should be a standard for all to live by. He is a true gentleman. You cannot do any better than having Peter as a friend.”

irastaknow says:
“I’ve seen Peter’s comments all around Flickr - he seems to always act as a gentelman - never demanding alway complimenting others he is trully a great spirit. I am proud to know him and the spirit he has for life. Bravo my Flickr friend we love you. Good luck with your struggles for you are loved.”

Now, after reading that, what is your impression of this Christian gentlemen, suffering, but full of so much life and heart? Exactly what mine was, probably. A lonely wonderful, Christian, man who is now confined to a chair and computer for most of his days who loved photography. Right?

Well, for those of you not familiar with Flickr, at the very bottom of every profile is a list of the groups you have joined and often frequent.

Here are some of Peter’s:

Breasts In Public, Lesbians!, nice boobs, Sexy Women, Women Kissing Women, Sexy Women Who Want “It”, tight tits, Newcomer Nude Models, and Hot, Sexy, Naked Women. To name just a few. And I shudder to think of what kind of accidental traffic I might attract because of what I just typed.

Now, I’m sitting here, with so much feeling and SO much to say to this, but I just feel that it can go unsaid. Everything I’ve ever felt about people disgracing the “Christian” name, ideals, etc is right there in front of me and for once I feel just too tired to bitch about it.

I just thought I would share.

Poor old geezer.

Are you a religious sort of gal? Cos that would kind of explain why his being a Christian would be an emphasis of that post.

You know it’s not necessarily THAT shocking when you think about it… I’ve got personal opinions on the way I deal with things pornographic. But lots of intelligent people have very different beliefs, deeper understandings, about their bodies, and about the regulation of sexual imagery, and their roles in being responsible for their production.

Maybe you should ask him about it? If he’s made all those things publicly visible he’s obviously not ashamed of it and could probably give you more info.

It still doesn’t mean he ain’t an all right guy.

I guess if you assumed straight away that he wouldn’t be into that kind of thing, A because of his age, and B because of his religion, it has allot to teach about assumptions.

Interesting post!

Exactly my point! I’m not a religious girl at all, actually, (I get that a lot) but I’m surrounded by religion and good family and friends who are religious.

It is not okay to look at pornography in the eyes of the Christian god or religion, it just isn’t. And nudity is VERY different from pornography. I have no problems what-so-ever with nude photography. But joining groups like, “tight tits” is no way presentable nude photography. It’s lude, and that’s the point I’m trying to make. So many people who call themselves Christians are full of shit and it’s disappointing to see Jesus’ words, which are mostly very good, and his teachings slaughtered by the people.

And ironically I assumed right of the bat because of what he posted and where, and because of his age- that he WOULD do those things. I thought he was a lude old man on the internet to look at young girls. Then I slapped myself for making such an awful assumption and proceeded to read his profile. After reading more of his story, and how a few of his contacts said he was a gentleman, I was disappointed with myself because of my rash assumption.

But then I looked at his contacts. And his groups. And even if he is a great guy that eats from a tube and looks at porn all day, that part doesn’t really matter. And I guess I really can’t express exactly what I’m trying to say. Whether or not Peter is a good guy doesn’t matter to me. What matters is that you need to honor yourself. If you call yourself a Christian and you believe in those ways, then act it. The entire Christian religion is becoming a joke because of people that treat it like a joke. And just as an incidental side note, you can’t make the groups in your profile hidden. They are public not by choice but by default. =\

Again, I am not religious, but I do feel that the words of Christ were extremely intelligent and most teachings are good, they are honest, virtuous, and pure. And to say you are a follower of Christ and then to blatantly and publicly go against the teachings is like a Buddhist pissing on Buddha’s statue. That’s really all I’m trying to say. Take your own advice. Be true to yourself. However you want to put it. If you’re a person who feels strongly about being animal friendly and you don’t want to eat meat, great. But don’t call yourself vegan if you aren’t really vegan. Because that’s not who you are and it disgraces the Vegan name for someone to see you wearing leather and preaching about being kind to animals. You are still wearing your leather jacket and your shoes and that’s a blatant display of something you say you are but are not. It’s disgraceful to you and to who you are. I just wish people had enough respect for other religions and what they try to accomplish enough to not disgrace them. I can’t stand atheists who just rip on Christians because they’re not looking at the religion, they’re looking at the people, and unfortunately now a days nobody can look passed the end of their own nose. It’s sad.

And now I’m ranting about stuff I was too tired to rant about. Thank you for your comment, Jacob, it was wonderful and refreshing to read. =D

One summer I worked odd jobs. A friend’s mother–a legal assistant–called and told me that her employer’s wife needed help cleaning out the basement of a house on his street. The man had died and the lawyer was settling the estate because the man’s children wanted nothing to do with it.

Strange situation. The lawyer and his wife thought the man was all right. He had been a quiet man.

So the lawyer’s wife was cleaning the basement. It had flooded with three-inches of water. We slogged about in it and picked up tiny metal pieces and put them in garbage bags. The man had been into model trains. He had once been an electrician. So his basement was full of little pieces of metals, tiny metal plates, screws, nails, stripped wires, etc.

In one room was an intricate train setup. A mountain scene. People waving. Little buildings by which the train roared. Mulitple tracks. Thick ropes of electrical cords hung from the tables.

The woman told me about him, how she’d always liked him but never knew him. She paused. She said, “You know, when I cleaned the upstairs, I find all these pornographic films in the bottom of an armoir. He’d written reviews on post-it notes and stuck them to the tapes.”

Huh.

That is strange. The basement had all the trainparts and the scraps of metal but the upstairs had the pornographic films. Reviews on sticky notes, like three out of five stars or what? =D
