I have no idea what is so fascinating with vlog but it’s awesome. It’s just maybe the change from reading to watching a video done by the person. I counted 6 um’s but I was also a little distracted. You play with your hair a lot : ) I think it’s fascinating because you can listen to it and be doing something else at the same time and still know exactly what they are talking about. And your shirt needs to glow in the dark!
Haha, I didn’t notice. it’s because my bangs slip into my face all the time. It’s a nervous habit I imagine and I shall try to fix it.
I really don’t know what’s so amazing about vlogs, because you’re the only person I know that does them!!!
You are so extremely adorable though, even if not using your ‘cute voice’!!!!
Haha cheers, going to put the pics up from last weekend on my journal in about ten mins so check back in xx
It’s the next logical step after the Postmodernist art movement.
See, basic art/literature movements have all been progessing up to this point– from Classical (”Look, here’s God holding a flower, and maybe a bunch of angels”) to Impressionism (”Here’s a bunch of dots, and when you look at them from far away it makes a flower”) and everything in between…
…well, VERY simplified…
Modernism’s all about, “Ooh, make the viewer remember that he’s reading/watching/looking at art. He’s looking at my picture of the flower? I think the large text THIS IS FLOWER ART complements it rather nicely, don’t you?”
And then Post-modernism is like, “Yeah, that’s my flower painting…See how it has a plaque under it, that says, “Picture Of A Flower? That’s actually part of the overall, you know, art piece, man.”
What I mean to say, is that before Modern art, (and not to lump together every previous art movement, but….well, yeah) you were meant to look at a painting of a flower and see a flower–whatever the different movements at the time wanted you to think/feel about it. Modern art is meant to inspire you to ask questions about the thing itself– Like, “what the fuck it this picture even supposed to be about? I don’t see any naked women walking down stairs, wtf? Is this supposed to be art? I could do this by throwing paint at a wall!” and then Postmodernism says, kind of like the movie Pulp Fiction–it says, “yeah, it’s a sweet picture. Oh, forgot you were looking at art, did you? Well, now you remember. Oh, did you forget again?” (Kind of like The Game, which by the way YOU LOSE)–where was I–oh yes, Pulp Fiction.
You’re not completely enthralled an involved in the movie; you’re held between two states. Compare a movie, any pop culture movie, say City of Angels. (or, you know, don’t, cos I hate that movie.) You watch that movie and you get caught up in the story, you follow the characters; for a little while you maybe even forget you’re watching a movie. Compare this movie to something like Waking Life. You don’t just watch Waking Life to watch it–the whole time you’re perfectly aware you’re watching a movie; you’re thinking, What is this movie trying to say? What’s the meaning behind all these strange people? What’s the message here? Why is this guy’s head flowing like he’s made of runny eggs? The first film is classical basically any movement except Modernism (for my purposes here, anyway) and the second movie is very Modern.
It’s meant to break the fourth wall. The bit between the actors and the audience. In the Beginning of Art, the Fourth Wall was inviolable–actors never break character, never make a reference to the world outside their setting, never look directly at the camera. And then Along Came Modernism, in which the point was to fuck with the fourth wall; which flirts and teases with the fourth wall–MST3K, Pulp Fiction, or Twice Upon a Time. And lastly, there’s vlogging.
There IS no fourth wall in vlogging. It’s a new art movement–let’s call it, idk, Virtualism, or maybe Metarealism. Examples would be–reality television, without paid actors or scripts, where everyone know’s they’re on TV for the sake of being on TV, doing everything for the audience’s sake. Or, something like a recursive icon or a computer screen with a webcam pointed at the viewer–a fancy way of framing a mirror; saying, “look, here’s you, and the world you live in, and some strangers in it, whom you’ve never met and logically should have no interest in, and yet….you watch anyway.” Or, yes, vlogging.
So, yes. To summarize, for all you tl;dr peeps: It’s an art movement if I say it is.
Unless, you know, I’m completely wrong. Discuss.
Yeah, well, eff. When I did my recent vlog, the icon was my cleavage. So. Wonder how that happened, creepster Internet.
Random things:
1. Your shirt is incredible.
2. Your cats are flippin’ adorable.
Why vlogs are popular? I say that if you consider the five senses, then vlog gets one more of ‘em that regular ole blogging does not. And as you touched upon, people are visual, imagining things takes effort. It’s easier on the brain to take in someone’s slow, repetitive rambling than digest a well thought out, short novella that someone posted. Y’know?
Well, whatever. I think we should just call it a day, and be best friends so I can steal that shirt, and go to that tiny, charming theater you had in your recent snowing video.
Three quick points:
1) omg I’m so sorry I spammed your comment page with an essay;
2) dude. I was the first one on this page; how did 7 comments get between your question and my response?! >=O
3) waaaah I want an icon of a something sweet to match your page layouhouuuuut but I don’t know that to drawww…(maybe I’ll just demand that the horny chocolate milk be reserved for me (somewhat inappropriately, ufufufu =3))
My God, Kat, that’s a great fucking answer. And that’s a really good point. It is fascinating because it does break the fourth wall. I think that’s why it feels more “real” to me. There isn’t a pretty picture that you posed for and pretty words that it took you a day to perfect. It’s raw, it’s real, it’s right there in your face and flawed.
God, that was a really good response.
Elizabeth- But you did something cool with your canvas so all is well!
1. Thank you! Now I wish it glowed in the dark!
2. Merci, merci. So’s yours. (At least the one I saw in your video.) (Not that I’m suggesting that you might have an ugly cat, but suggesting you might have more than one that I have not seen.)
And, it sounds like a plan. =)
There you go again! First you say we’re all not “in our right minds” for watching your vlog, and now you insult the vanity of our cats. Well!
Jerk. ♥
AHHH! You posted again while I was typing up my reply! Whore!
1) Don’t apologise for the essay it was insanely great. I love it.
2) I know. Just timing, I guess.
3) CHURRO!
ANDSHITILOSTTHEGAME.
And what I meant by that was listening to someone talk about nothing. I was making an ass of myself, which to some can be considered funny. And talking about something. I don’t know.
Bitch.♥
1 - cunt is my favourite swear but fuck is also awesome
2 - YAY our hair IS growingggggg!
3 - narcissism righta this way (my journal ha)
Yes - normal voice. But I will say this. Now because of your Jei-voice, I use it if I’m talking to him too. And then I’m like ‘wait wtf why am I talking like this?’
Omg, i just wrote a huge comment and… yea.
Well, about the vlog thing, i think it’s like you said, we’re watching you, it’s more real, we’re listening to your voice, etc. I don’t do vlogs just because I would have to do it in english and I would feel stupid (i don’t like speaking english when I know english/american/australian/whoever speaks english people are watching. i feel really dumb, cause i know i have an accent. which is normal, cause well, i’m portuguese ahah but still.
while you talking i was looking at your shirt and thinking how cute it was, and then you started talking about it :D
and OMG the kitties. cuteness.
Ri- And then I’m like ‘wait wtf why am I talking like this?’
That’s exactly what it’s like for me. And Jei goes, “Sweed’s tiny voice.” And I’m like SHIT. Why do I do this around him. WHY?
Diana- It may be just me but I LOVE accents. I would love listening to your vlog (because you’re interesting) but also because you have a different way of saying the same words. Accents fascinate me. But I know what you mean though. I have been hesitant to do vlogs because I hate the sound of my own voice. But it was fun. I may have to do another one soon. =)
(And maybe I’ll use an accent of some sort.)
PS: Ri, it IS a huge effort to go upstairs. =P
LOL I loved that “omg dino shirt” moment.
Hm. Well I’m behind on blogging as well so you’re the only person I’ve seen doing it. I cannot beat Kat’s post or even add to it, haha. Personally it comes down to the personal effect for me. You’re a person I’d want to know beyond the internet and the video makes the connect seem that more real…hopefully that didn’t sound creepy. Also, I think it’s sooo much harder to do! I couldn’t do it! The voice meme I posted was hard and that was just me talking with no video. The written journal is great but we can go back and edit. This style doesn’t allow for that so much. Particularly if we don’t know video editing!
By the way, that paw touching was adorable.
And by connect I mean connection. ;]
I’d also like to add that I don’t think I’d watch anyone without having an interest in them as…a person?
Man. I’m running on little sleep, forgive me, haha.
Bronnie, that’s a good comment. It helps bridge the gap. And yeah, it’s really hard, but I’m finding it’s kind of addicting… It felt really good. I imagine if I just talked about something really personal it would feel good too.
vlogs are so interesting to me simply because i find it incredibly fascinating to hear the voice/see the idiosyncrasies of someone who i otherwise only know through written words. there’s a whole side of people’s personality that is conveyed through actually SEEING them move and HEARING them speak, you know? i’ve read some people’s blogs for years but i still can only know so much about their personalities through written word alone. vlogs make you feel so much more connected to a person.
Not your cute voice. (BTW, I counted 5…but then I may have got distracted by kittehs ♥)
